Dolby Atmos Guidelines
Dolby Atmos Mixing
Dolby Atmos mixing lets your music be experienced in immersive surround sound and is now supported by platforms like Apple Music and Tidal. Apple is particularly focused on Atmos content and offers up to 10% additional royalties for tracks delivered in this format.
You can even submit an Atmos version after a release if the song is gaining traction – especially on Apple-curated playlists, where Atmos mixes are often favoured.
Because Dolby Atmos mixing has stricter technical requirements than stereo mastering, please follow the guidelines below to ensure the best results.
Stem Delivery Guidelines
-
5–10 stems is ideal
Group similar instruments (e.g. all drums, guitars, backing vocals) to keep the mix clear and focused. Ensure Bass & Kick are both individual tracks. -
48kHz, 24-bit WAV files
While I can convert other sample rates, exporting directly at 48kHz avoids any potential quality loss. -
Print all master effects, including fades
The Atmos version must match your stereo master exactly for Apple’s approval process. -
Include your final stereo master
This helps ensure alignment and consistency. Please keep all stems time-aligned and the same length as the master file. -
No clipping on the stereo master
Make sure your master peaks cleanly. Clipping may become more noticeable in spatial mixes and can delay approval.
If you’re unable to meet any of the above points, just get in touch before sending files. Workarounds are often possible – but please note that changes to the stereo mix or stems after delivery may incur additional revision fees.
Final Delivery Format
Your Atmos master will be delivered as a high-resolution .wav file. This file is much larger than a typical WAV and requires Dolby Atmos-compatible software to play correctly.
If you'd like a reference version, I can also provide an .mp4 for general playback – though for accurate monitoring, you’ll still need a Dolby Atmos setup or compatible headphones.
